Interview with Michelle Hauck, author of the BIRTH OF SAINTS Series

I’m honored to be featuring Michelle Hauck on my website today. As many of you know, she’s the author of the BIRTH OF SAINTS Series. Her first book, GRUDGING, was published 12/15, and FAITHFUL will come out on November 15, 2016. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this fantastic series.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a mother of two college students, and I work with special needs kids in an elementary school. Passionate Chicago Cubs fan for decades. Addicted reader. I also host many online contests dedicated to matching writers with literary agents. I love to chat on social media. Come say hi on twitter. You can find me at @Michelle4Laughs.

What inspired you to write the BIRTH OF SAINTS Series?

My usual answer is to say all the ideas came from the lyrics of one song. But even before I heard the song, I had a general idea that I wanted to write something that wasn’t set in an English or American-based world. Those are the traditional settings for epic fantasy, but I wanted to stretch myself. Somehow the word “sand” from that song led to a desert setting, plus the fact that I had taken a recent vacation in Tucson, Arizona. All their amazing scenery inspired me and the book became a Spanish-inspired world under siege.

Once I had the world, I had to give it life. I think the grandest epic fantasy go beyond merely creating characters to the culture behind them that makes them tick. Like a lot of my writing, the big picture in Birth of Saints focuses on a clash of cultures and how the different political and religious beliefs come into conflict. I make sure to weave in not only the conflict, but the complexities that cause the characters to respond as they do. That is the fun part of making up worlds!

I know you’ve finished book 2, FAITHFUL. How are plans for book 3 coming along? Any hints you can share with your readers about book 2 or 3?

I think I can safely say that Faithful has the same kind of fast-paced ending as Grudging. There are new tests and new twists, along with new characters. You’ll get to see a little more about the Women of the Song in Faithful and even more in the untitled third book, including Claire’s grandmother. I’m also working on scenes that show the background of how the Northerners came to leave their homeland from the point of view of Santabe as she becomes a major player. You’ll have to read it to find out more.

Once this series is finished, what are your plans for future books, or have you thought that far ahead?

Thanks for asking. I’d started a rewrite of my first ever manuscript—the one that had no conflict, was full of head jumping, and told instead of showed—over a year ago. I worked on it again last summer and got all the way to the big finale when I had to work on book 3 for Birth of Saints. I plan to finish that rewrite first thing. I also have another manuscript with my agent at the moment and hopefully that will go out to editors in the next few months. Then there are several ideas knocking around in my head. It will be exciting to write about a whole new world during the summer of 2017.

Thank you, Michelle. I wish you all the best with FAITHFUL’s release.

Following Grudging–and with a mix of Terry Goodkind and Bernard Cornwall–religion, witchcraft, and chivalry war in Faithful, the exciting next chapter in Michelle Hauck’s Birth of Saints series!

A world of Fear and death…and those trying to save it.

Colina Hermosa has burned to the ground. The Northern invaders continue their assault on the ciudades-estados. Terror has taken hold, and those that should be allies betray each other in hopes of their own survival. As the realities of this devastating and unprovoked war settles in, what can they do to fight back?

On a mission of hope, an unlikely group sets out to find a teacher for Claire, and a new weapon to use against the Northerners and their swelling army.

What they find instead is an old woman.

But she’s not a random crone—she’s Claire’s grandmother. She’s also a Woman of the Song, and her music is both strong and horrible. And while Claire has already seen the power of her own Song, she is scared of her inability to control it, having seen how her magic has brought evil to the world, killing without reason or remorse. To preserve a life of honor and light, Ramiro and Claire will need to convince the old woman to teach them a way so that the power of the Song can be used for good. Otherwise, they’ll just be destroyers themselves, no better than the Northerners and their false god, Dal. With the annihilation their enemy has planned, though, they may not have a choice.

A tale of fear and tragedy, hope and redemption, Faithful is the harrowing second entry in the Birth of Saints trilogy.
